Just connect an antenna to an RFID chip in the right way, and you already have created a so-called passive tag (or 'transponder', 'electronic label', etc).
The 'reader' as counterpart of the typical RFID system creates an RF field which powers the battery-less tag and is used to exchanges data with it at the same time.

RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) - a data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data - appeared first in the 1980s.

Since then the worldwide used amount of devices has reached numbers of several billion tags per year. Three frequency ranges (Low Frequency, High Frequency, Ultra-High Frequency) are standardised, all meeting different requirements, like reading distances, and application areas.

There are good reasons for RFID

There are good reasons for RFID

RFID has become an indispensable part of logistics, goods tracking, identification. It is a perfect extension, sometimes even a replacement, of existing bar code solutions.
Unlike bar code, RFID tags do not require line of sight in order to identify items, dirty environment does not influence their readability.

RFID tags hold more data than bar codes. The major differentiator is the unique serial number in the RFID's Electronic Product Code (EPC) which allows tracking of individual items.
Combining tags with sensors creates an additional huge number of applications.

Best of all: Prices have been lowered constantly over the time, while the numbers of application areas  - also within medium sized companies - still increase dramatically.
