EBV Elektronik Presents SnakeBytes, a Highly Flexible Reference Design Platform for High-End Industrial Applications

December 2006
Munich, Germany: EBV Elektronik, an Avnet (NYSE:AVT) company, presents SnakeBytes, a complete modular and flexible reference design platform for high-end industrial applications, which has been developed jointly by EBV Elektronik, Altera, Avago Technologies, Freescale Semiconductor and National Semiconductor.

Comprising a Freescale MPC8349E PowerQUICC™ processor-based main board, an Altera Stratix II FPGA-based peripheral/co-processor board and multiple add-on boards for peripherals and I/O configuration, SnakeBytes provides a solution to meet the growing demand for high processing power, flexible hardware co-processing and a rich set of I/O standards and media.

“By combining a PowerQUICC II Pro processor and a high-density Stratix II FPGA, SnakesBytes allows users to extend I/O capabilities, add customised interfaces and boost the system performance far beyond what could be achieved using a ‘single solution,’” said Rudy van Parijs, Vice President Technical Development for EBV Elektronik.

"SnakeBytes is the result of combining leading technology and design expertise of key suppliers and design partners with EBV's application experience and market know-how," added van Parijs. "With SnakeBytes we provide our customers with a very efficient, flexible and high performance design platform that helps to shorten the design cycle and by this reduce costs and time-to-market significantly. We are very proud to present only two months after we released DragonFire*, the second state-of-art reference design platform. And there is more to come: we have a number of application reference designs in the pipeline to be released in the next several months," van Parijs concludes.

To help customers using SnakeBytes to achieve the fastest possible time-to-market, EBV offers Linux BSP, best-in-class development tools plus an easily configurable I/O system based on FPGAs.

Two different versions of SnakeBytes are available: SnakeBytesKIT-PCI for high data throughput and SnakeBytesKIT-LB for low latency data transmission,  allowing customers to connect the PowerQUICC processor to the Stratix II FPGA trough the PCI Bus or the Local Bus depending on the application requirements. Both kits feature a Linux BSP and include an Open Core evaluation version for the IP-PCI or IP-LB.

Both alternatives support a large number of I/O modules offering a wide range of interface options such us: RS-232, RS-485, CAN, copper and fibre industrial Ethernet, DVI-IN, DVI-OUT and TFT LVDS interface. Additionally, several memory extension modules are provided for both alternatives: 128MByte SDRAM Module, and 2MByte Fast SRAM plus 8MByte Flash.

SnakeBytesKIT-PCI will be available in December 2006; SnakeBytesKIT-LB will be available in the first quarter of 2007. Prices are from €799, depending on features. Further information may be found at www.ebv.com/snakebytes

*DragonFire is providing developers with a tailored development package for Freescale Semiconductor’s MCF532X ColdFireTM microprocessor family in the form of the COBRA5329 reference platform.
This reference board and Linux software environment has been developed in a joint project undertaken by senTec Elektronik and emlix, which was commissioned by Freescale Semiconductor, National Semiconductor and EBV Elektronik. More information under www.ebv.com/dragonfire
