FalconEye FPGA is a motor control reference design, which enables the changeover from known microcontroller technology to FPGA-based motor control.

 

The franchise partners for this reference design are:  Altera Corporation, Avago Technologies, Fairchild Semiconductor and STMicroelectronics.

 

The FalconEye FPGA is suitable for brushless AC and induction motors. FalconEye FPGA Motor Control is real time VHDL on hardware and a 'C' based software solution running on Nios® II.

The FalconEye FPGA reference design platform was developed in collaboration between Altera®, Avago Technologies, Fairchild Semiconductor, Freescale Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics and EBV Elektronik.

 

The modular FalconEye board with PFC (Power Factor Correction) is used for controlling and/or regulating brushless synchronous and induction motors.

FalconEye from EBV offers developers enormous potential benefits, ranging from huge energy savings to high-precision control options and significant improvement in EMI behaviour.

 

At present, FalconEye is optimised for controlling brushless direct current motors (BLDC). The board can be easily converted for use with alternating current motors (BLAC), switched reluctance motors (SR) and induction motors (IM).

FalconEye FPGA is not a finished product, but an FPGA initial aid for experienced motor control or FPGA developers. It is assumed that the user adapts and expands the VHDL and C sources. Customer-specific solutions are not only configured, as with a microcontroller, but must be programmed in VHDL or C.

FalconEye FPGA is only suitable to a limited extent for:

  • Simple motor control without field bus and feed-back capabilities, because special motor control DSCs (such as Freescale) are usually less expensive
  • Motor control ‘novices’, for whom the flexibility and complexity of the FPGA is often too much

 

The FalconEye FPGA reference design addresses automation customers for high end applications with fast and flexible interfaces.

The latest FalconEye generation can be used together with an ECN 1123 rotary encoder (with integral bearing for integration in motors) with a serial EnDat 2.2 HEIDENHAIN interface.

EBV’s DBC4CE55 'MercuryCode' Cyclone® IV Industrial Development Board. This FPGA-based Development Board is designed specifically for use in industrial applications.
