Fairchild Power Switch (FPS) for

The FSFR-series is a complete integrated circuit with controller, high/low side drivers and two MOSFETs. It forms the main building block of a half-bridge LLC resonant converter.

LLC resonant converters are used in power supplies from 100 W – 1 kW. They have an efficiency of more than 90%. They work best with a narrow input voltage range, for example 195 VAC – 265 VAC, or alternatively with a front end power factor correction (PFC) stage.


Standard series resonant converters have excellent full load efficiency, but suffer from reduced efficiency at lighter loads as the switching frequency increases greatly. LLC resonant converters are a simple development of series resonant converters. Series resonant converters use one inductor (L) and one capacitor (C). LLC converters use a second, uncoupled inductor to greatly reduce the dependency of the switching frequency on the load. They are therefore highly efficient at a wide range of loads.

In the FSFR family, the method of switching is Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS), which results in very low EMI and very high efficiency. The diodes in the MOSFETs have fast recovery times which allows small deadbands in the switching cycles, further improving efficiency. In addition to the LLC resonant converter, the FSFR family can be applied to series resonant converters and parallel resonant converters.

Application note AN-4151 can be used to calculate the power levels at different input voltages and output voltages. This application note contains very detailed formulas and very easy descriptions, resulting in good and reliable designs. Winding techniques are described. All the curves in the switching cycles are shown.
