The licence-free Industrial/Scientific/Medical (ISM) frequency band from 868.0 to 870.0 MHz is well suited for simple control networks and point-to-point wireless connections. With the correct combination of transmitter power and receiver sensitivity, transmission distances can be tailored to suit the application, typically from a few tens of metres up to 10 km. Depending on modulation type, raw bitrates from 10 up to ~150 kbps are possible. Maximum radiated power is limited to between 5 and 500 mW depending on which channel is used, additionally limitations on transmitter duty-cycle are mandated. No generally accepted networking or interoperability standard exists for the ISM-band, so a solution will always be proprietary. Note that this band is only available in Europe. |
